Project Overview

Ragnar Benson was hired as construction manager and designer for the Global III intermodal freight transport facility. The aim was to consolidate operational functions of Global III with Union Pacific's other Chicago-area intermodal facilities in order to decrease transit times and create a competitive new service for customers. The project, developed in two phases, included the 13-track switching area, which is parallel to the receiving and departing tracks, the intermodal terminal with a capability for 720,000 lifts, a 10-lane gate entrance with a 7,200-unit container yard and a full build-out. This project also included state-of-the-art security, lighting, and AGS technology.
